Between The Pages

If your life was a book, what would be between the pages?

Most of the readers of my blog are writers, but what else makes up your life? What would be between the pages of your book?

I am a writer, but I started on this journey just recently. I have been writing for only a few years.

Because of my mother, I was interested in crafts and sewing from an early age. I remember her getting craft kits in the mail and I helped her make Christmas decorations with them. . . a Styrofoam Noel sign, tubular plastic Christmas ornaments with scenes inside them. We also made Santas from Readers Digest magazines. We made necklaces from the pages of magazines. We cut the long strips into a triangle shape and rolled them up. We shellacked them and put them on a string for a long necklace.

I remember Mom's treadle Singer sewing machine. She was a very talented seamstress. I started sewing when in Home Economics class in junior high school. I made dresses, swim suits, pant suits, ponchos and eventually my wedding dress. After getting married and having kids, I spent many hours behind the sewing machine making Halloween outfits. My boys enjoyed being Popeye, dinosaurs, clowns, pumpkins and Frankenstein. I have also tried my hand at quilting. I am not that good at it, but that is okay. If I don't hand quilt it, I tie the finished product. I am an impatient person and like to see quick results.

So that is a small peek at what I like to do.

In looking at my list of interests, I find that they are not all that different than writing.

My interests all require an imagination.
They require patience.
They require persistence.
They require a little bit of God given talent.

Put that all together, though, and you can succeed at what you like to do, and that includes writing!

What are your other interests?

  1. I like crocheting (which I'm good at) and dancing (not too bad at) and singing (bad at.)

  2. I enjoy crafts and creating. I love photography, too. (Still shoot professionally.) I'm also uber-organized. I like making lists and charts and stuff. But beyond the creativity, I love animals, roller coasters, movies, and music.

  3. I like many of the same things that you do, Janet. I've written stories and poems since I was in high school. I also love to sew, do crafts and crochet when I have the time.

  4. I enjoy my monthly book club, playing the piano and guitar, yardwork, and my pets.
    Have a great weekend!

  5. Janet,
You are a very talented person. I also took home ec. in high school and learned to sew. My mother always made our clothes. I didn't own a store bought dress until I was out of high school. I tried my hand at quilting, but didn't like it very much.
You are indeed a creative person.

  6. I am very much like you. I like crafting, sewing, cross stitch, crocheting, gardening, writing and blogging.
I am presently learning web programming and I love it. It gets frustrating sometimes, but I still love it.

  7. I'm not a crafty person for the most part. I can draw a bit and cartoon quite well. I can't sew or quilt or knit worth beans, although for years I embroidered (pre-kids :)). I do love to cook and bake - nothing fancy just home cooking stuff :)

  8. Janet, so nice to learn more about your creative pursuits. I first started to sew when I was five--not very well--but I sewed a lot through high school, and then just picked it up again a few years ago. Now I make cloth dolls. I made a doll of Hattie and Jasper from my book, Hill Hawk Hattie. So satisfying. Thanks for this post.

  9. How interesting you sound. I am a wanna be writer and writing is my daily schedule. I love to read as well. You can say I have been writing my (journal)book for 40 years...the age of my oldest child. They are always children and the source of our motivation; not? yes..want to hear more from you.

Thank you for your comments. I love comments!
