scary characters

It's October and Halloween will soon be here.

Let's make a list of scary children's characters.

Penguin took a poll and at the top of their list of scary characters was the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia. I hate to admit it, but I've never read the book, so I'll take their word for it.

How about these for scary characters:
  • the Wild Things
  • Cruella de Vil of 101 Dalmations
  • the Big Bad Wolf of Little Red Riding Hood
  • the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz
  • the flying monkeys in Wizard of Oz
  • the Witch in Hansel and Gretel
I know it's a medal winner and I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not crazy about Where the Wild Things Are like most people. The monsters are horrible looking and I don't like the character telling his mother, "I'll eat you up!" It amazes me sometimes how some books become so popular.

I know I've only scratched the surface. Add to my list and tell me your favorite scary children's characters.

  1. The children's character that gave me nightmares: The child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

For stories, the Snow Queen in Hans Christian Andersen's second story in A Tale in Seven Stories.

  2. Janet, The first movie I ever saw at the theater was Snow White and that witch scared me to death. LOL

Brandon is only in grade 9. He goes to a technical school and takes one tech course every six weeks. He just finished horticulture and he loved it. He will also take cooking sometime this year and maybe woodworking. They do this so children with disabilities can feel out their niche. Like your son, Brandon loves to build things.

Enjoyed visiting with you again. It's been a while. I'm not sure if you knew that my husband had a stroke, so life has been hectic. Please stay in touch.

    Enjoy your weekend.
    Blessings,
    Mary

  3. The evil queen in Snow White always freaked me out. Didn't she want the woodsmen to cut out Snow White's heart and put it in a box or something? Talk about violent! The White Witch of Narnia is another blood chiller. You should read that one...it's awesome.

  4. Not much scared me when I was a child. I loved scary stuff.
But the wizard in the Wizard of Oz, freaked me out. That is....before they pulled the curtain back.

  6. Janet,

I am so glad to fins someone else who does not like Where the Wild Things Are! I have never liked that book either, although I did read it to my second graders as I felt "obligated".
